From Wednesday, July 29 through Sunday, August, 9 the Bible Baptist Church will not hold in-person services. Our online presentations will be Sunday mornings at 11am and Wednesday evenings at 7pm during those two weeks.
Several folks from the church have recently tested positive for COVID-19. This has prompted the schedule change. Our desire is to minimize the virus’ spread within our congregation and community. These cases have come at once instead of spread out over time. That increases my concern, and prompts this action.
For over two months we have gathered on Sunday mornings. We have slowly and systematically re-engaged our other services and ministries over that time. Suspending our in-person gatherings is taking two-steps backwards. That rarely feels right, but this decision has not been made based on a feeling. Sometimes we have to step back so that we may move forward better. That is what we are doing.
These are unusual days. While pandemics are not new to humanity, this is the first time we have been forced to walk this path. Let’s go forward with a united voice and spirit, trusting our good, wise, and sovereign God all the way. Let’s pray and sing as King David did: “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.” Psalm 86:11-12

Psalm 34:8, “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
If you feel, or have you ever felt, that the song, “I can’t get no satisfaction” is your personal anthem, then read today’s verse and drink deeply from this well of promise. God will deliver, protect and satisfy every soul that trusts Him! When a person puts their faith and trust in the Lord to save them, that person becomes a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) in Christ Jesus. This means, “the creation of new desires, not just new duties; new delights, not just new deeds; new treasures, not just new tasks” (John Piper). When you find that you’re not satisfied, check to be sure that you are actually trusting Jesus. Trust Jesus in every situation, and you will always be satisfied.

Psalm 31:1, “In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.”
Life is often unstable and stressful. Many voices clamor for your ear and your trust. The only way to have confidence in shaky times is to be firmly planted on trustworthy ground. There is no more sure foundation than the Lord and His Word. Place your confidence here, and you will never be ashamed. Following God’s Word is the only cure for shame, including the shame we heap on ourselves for having trusted wrong voices in the past. God is righteous. He will deliver. No matter what, listen to and trust in God’s Word. Which is His voice. Not only will you be blessed, you will be steadied to bless others.

Psalm 18:30, “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.”
The desire for justice is a natural impulse. The observation of injustice is too regular an occurrence. Sadder yet is the uncomfortable fact that we are all guilty of being unjust. Praiser God that He is blameless in every way! Others – including us – will waver in their commitments. Not God. He has proven to always and only be faithful. His record is spotless. He will shield every trusting soul. He hasn’t lost one yet. Are you enjoying the peace of the tried and true God? You will, if you look to Him in and for all things.

Psalm 62:8, “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
At all times our trust is placed in someone or something. We trust the car to get us to work. We trust our employer to pay us our wages. We trust our friends to be there for us. We trust in so many others on some level every day. This Psalm reminds us that at all times and with our entire being we should completely trust God. While there is absolutely no shelter FROM God, there is only shelter IN Him. Be wholly vulnerable with God because He will perfectly shelter you. Take a moment to think about that today.

Ezekiel 11:19, “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:”
The world is full of hard-hearted people. Child of God, we must not be numbered among them. Believers in Jesus have new hearts. Hearts which should be tender, but the believer’s heart may become hardened if we are careless. Tender hearts are compassionate hearts. Jesus was moved by compassion, and His followers must be as well. As Christ’s followers we need to embrace empathy. Open your heart to a need that you see in your family, church, or community. Pray and trust God to lead and enable you to help meet that need and live that way.

Jerusalem was jumping. Always was at Passover. Those from the region and from far away, journeyed to the city on a hill. It was time to observe the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This year, however, was unordinary. That was due to Jesus of Nazareth. This man spoke like no one else. He did things no one else could do. And He was on His way.
Recently, Jesus had been nearby in Bethany. There He called Lazarus, a man who had been dead for four days, back to life. More recently, in Jericho, He had given sight to blind Bartimaeus. But the people of Jericho did not know what was more amazing:
blind Bartimaeus seeing or
tax collector Zacchaeus repaying four-fold all the people whom he had cheated, and also giving half his goods to the poor. The air in Jerusalem was also electric because people were aware that the chief priests and Pharisees wanted to arrest Jesus. All of this conspired together to create a sensation as people watched the road, wondered to themselves and asked one another: “Do you think He will show?” (
John 11:55-57).
Prophetically. Publicly. But NOT Pompously.
The Lord Jesus did show, and His public arrival not only frustrated the chief priests and Pharisees who wanted to stealthily swipe Jesus off the street so as to destroy Him after the feast, but it also fulfilled Messianic prophecies (
Jeremiah 9:9; Psalm 113-118). While nothing was transpiring according to
their plan, all of it
was according to God’s plan. Everything about Jesus, from His birth to His death to His resurrection and all points in between, all happened according to the divine timetable. Obviously, that includes everything from His coming on the colt, to His cursing the fig tree, and to His cleansing the temple.

What Is Your Calling?
“Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.”1 Corinthians 7:20
Some persons have the foolish notion that the only way in which they can live for God is by becoming ministers, missionaries, or Bible women. Alas! how many would be shut out from any opportunity of magnifying the Most High if this were the case. Beloved, it is not office, it is earnestness; it is not position, it is grace which will enable us to glorify God. God is most surely glorified in that cobbler’s stall, where the godly worker, as he plies the awl, sings of the Saviour’s love, aye, glorified far more than in many a prebendal stall where official religiousness performs its scanty duties. The name of Jesus is glorified by the poor unlearned carter as he drives his horse, and blesses his God, or speaks to his fellow laborer by the roadside, as much as by the popular divine who, throughout the country, like Boanerges, is thundering out the gospel. God is glorified by our serving him in our proper vocations. Take care, dear reader, that you do not forsake the path of duty by leaving your occupation, and take care you do not dishonour your profession while in it. Think little of yourselves, but do not think too little of your callings. Every lawful trade may be sanctified by the gospel to noblest ends. Turn to the Bible, and you will find the most menial forms of labour connected either with most daring deeds of faith, or with persons whose lives have been illustrious for holiness. Therefore be not discontented with your calling. Whatever God has made your position, or your work, abide in that, unless you are quite sure that he calls you to something else. Let your first care be to glorify God to the utmost of your power where you are. Fill your present sphere to his praise, and if he needs you in another he will show it you. This evening lay aside vexatious ambition, and embrace peaceful content.

But neither are your circumstances. So take heart from Isaiah 41:10, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Fear haunts our hearts and freezes our footsteps. Fear threatens to rip us to shreds. Instead of focusing on your fear fix your heart on the Lord who is always with you. We have a choice. Live in fear of all the uncertainties, or cling to the reality of God’s sustaining and intervening presence in our lives. Be strengthened by the fact that you are not in control, and neither are your circumstances. Almighty God is on the throne and everything is working according to His good, wise, and loving plan. You may be unsure of what will happen next. God cannot be caught by surprise. Place your confidence there, in the God who is always good, only wise, completely loving, and all-powerful.

Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
Patience is not just a virtue but fruit of the Spirit. This also means that impatience is a demonstration of the old, fallen nature. Our impatience makes us vulnerable to be used and manipulated by Satan to accomplish his fallen purposes. Think of the anger, hurtful words, anxiety, and loss of testimony that impatience consistently breeds in our lives. Far better is the sweetness of Jesus, released in our lives when we trust Him. Take a moment, then a deep breath, and decide to depend on God enough to stop resisting life’s interruptions and welcome them as God’s unscheduled opportunities. Unscheduled by us but scheduled by Him. Lean hard into God during those times, and they will bear sweet fruit while glorifying His name.
